The Kerala Wonders route starts with a detour to Athirappilly — Kerala's largest waterfall and the 'Niagara of India' — before joining the classic Munnar–Thekkady–Alleppey chain. It's the right tour for travellers who want the rainforest and waterfall added to the usual hills, wildlife and backwater mix, all inside a week.
Athirappilly is best at the start of the trip when you're still close to Kochi, so the long drive north to Munnar happens fresh. Palyatra builds in the houseboat night on the Alleppey backwaters, the Periyar boat safari and the tea-estate visit so the week stays varied without idle days.
Best time: June to August shows Athirappilly at full monsoon force; September to March is best for the rest. Carry a rain jacket if travelling in the monsoon.
